Placing the God of Wealth – Guan Gong: The Right Way to Welcome Prosperity
In Chinese culture, Guan Gong — also known as Lord Guan or General Guan Yu — is honored as the Martial God of Wealth.
With his commanding presence, fierce loyalty, and unshakable righteousness, he is believed to protect homes and businesses, ward off evil, and attract wealth and prosperity. His image has long been cherished by merchants and business owners seeking both fortune and honor.
Yet, many people who bring home a Guan Gong statue don’t realize that his placement carries deep Feng Shui meaning. When placed incorrectly, the spiritual energy becomes blocked — not because the statue is “fake,” but because the setup doesn’t align with the rules of balance and respect.
Here are the essential Feng Shui guidelines for displaying Guan Gong correctly to ensure blessings and wealth flow freely.
1. Facing Direction: Sit North, Face South
Traditionally, Guan Gong should be placed sitting north and facing south, preferably with his gaze directed toward the main entrance.
The ideal location is about one-third into the living room or main hall. His line of sight should be clear and unobstructed — there should be no sharp objects or barriers in front of him.
Avoid positioning him to face the bathroom, kitchen, or bedroom, as these areas carry mixed or impure energy.
2. Facing the Main Door for Wealth and Protection
If the north-south position conflicts with the main door’s direction, always prioritize having Guan Gong face the main entrance.
This alignment allows him to “guard the gate,” protecting the household from negative energy and helping invite fortune and success. His stern gaze keeps evil away and brings peace and prosperity to the home or business.
3. Backed by a Wall – The Symbol of Support
The statue should always be placed against a solid wall, symbolizing a strong “mountain of support.” Just as a person needs backing to stand firm, a deity should not “stand in the wind.”
However, never place Guan Gong with his back against a bathroom, as that would be considered disrespectful and energetically unclean.
4. Proper Height for Placement
The base of the statue should ideally align at eye level with your head when you stand before it.
There’s an old saying in Chinese culture: “Three feet above the head, the divine resides.”
Placing the statue at this height reflects reverence and ensures spiritual connection.
5. Understanding the Blade Position
Modern Guan Gong statues often come in two styles —
-
Sword Pointing Up: symbolizes Guan Gong’s righteousness, loyalty, and integrity.
-
Sword Pointing Down: represents inviting and gathering wealth.
Both meanings are auspicious, but it’s important to choose intentionally based on your purpose — protection or prosperity — and not mix them up.
A properly placed Guan Gong statue is more than decoration — it’s a guardian of both virtue and wealth.
He teaches that true prosperity comes from honesty, courage, and moral strength. When you honor him with sincerity and respect, he not only protects your fortune but also your peace of mind.
