With coins often held in its mouth and treasure beneath its feet, the three legs also symbolize stability and the gathering of wealth from all directions.

This Seven-Star Money Toad is a finely crafted solid brass figurine, designed as a traditional symbol of wealth, prosperity, and good fortune. Distinctive for its three-legged form, the money toad is often associated with attracting opportunities and safeguarding abundance.

Why does the Money Toad have three legs?

Unlike ordinary frogs or toads with four legs, the three-legged toad (Money Toad) does not exist in nature and is therefore regarded in traditional Chinese culture as a rare and auspicious creature, symbolizing good fortune.

Its three legs carry deep meanings:

  • They represent the Three Powers—Heaven, Earth, and Humanity—signifying harmony and balance.

  • They correspond to the Sun, Moon, and Stars, embodying the eternal cycle of nature.

  • With coins often held in its mouth and treasure beneath its feet, the three legs also symbolize stability and the gathering of wealth from all directions.

Thus, the three-legged form makes the Money Toad a unique emblem of prosperity, longevity, and blessings.

The Legend and Origin of the Three-Legged Money Toad

What makes the three-legged toad so unique, and why has it been so highly revered in traditional culture?

As its name suggests, the three-legged toad is a mythical creature with only three legs. According to legend, Liu Hai, a disciple of the immortal Lü Dongbin, loved to travel the world, helping people and subduing evil spirits. One day, Liu Hai encountered a powerful toad spirit that was harming local villagers. To bring peace to the people, he cleverly used his magic to subdue the creature.

During their fierce battle, the toad spirit lost one of its legs and was transformed into a three-legged toad. After being tamed, the toad repented by using its unique ability of “biting coins and attracting wealth”, becoming Liu Hai’s companion in helping the poor and needy. From then on, the image of the three-legged toad as a bringer of wealth and treasure was firmly established, earning it the popular name “Money Toad” or “Fortune Toad.”

In symbolism, the three-legged toad represents rolling wealth, prosperity, and abundant fortune. In Feng Shui practice, it is also believed to have the power to draw in and accumulate money. People believe that wearing a jade carving of the three-legged toad can enhance personal wealth luck, while placing a figurine of it in the wealth corner of the home or at the cash register of a shop helps attract prosperity and continuous financial success.

There is even a popular saying among the people: “Whoever gains the Money Toad will surely become wealthy.” This reflects the long-standing cultural belief in its power to bring prosperity and abundance.

Placement of the Three-Legged Money Toad

Common Designs and Placement of the Three-Legged Money Toad

The common design of the three-legged toad (Money Toad) usually features three legs, a Taiji (yin-yang) symbol on its head, and the Big Dipper constellation on its back. Based on whether it holds a coin in its mouth, it can be divided into two categories:

  • Toad with a coin in its mouth – represents spitting out money. In Feng Shui placement, its head should face inside the house, symbolizing wealth flowing in.

  • Toad without a coin in its mouth – represents absorbing wealth. In placement, its head should face outward, helping to draw fortune from all directions into the home.

To fully benefit from the toad’s symbolic power of attracting wealth and warding off negative energy, several rules of placement are emphasized in Feng Shui tradition:

  1. Consecration (Opening the Eyes)
After a ritual consecration (“opening the eyes”), the Money Toad is believed to be more effective in attracting wealth and warding off evil. Traditionally, it is advised that only the owner should be present during this ritual, so that the toad “remembers” you and works for your fortune.

  2. Placement Direction
For toads without a coin (absorbing wealth), the head must face outward, but should not directly face the main entrance, to avoid “conflicting with the gate deity.” Instead, it should be slightly angled. At night, the head is often turned inward, symbolizing bringing the day’s fortune into your treasury.

  3. Avoid Being Touched by Strangers
The toad should not be casually touched by visitors or outsiders, as this is believed to weaken its energy.

  4. Offerings
Since the three-legged toad is not considered a deity, it does not require incense worship. Simple offerings of fresh water and fruit on the 1st and 15th days of the lunar month are considered sufficient.

  5. Height and Position
The toad should not be placed too low, as higher placement is believed to help attract wealth. However, if there are deity figures in the home, the toad should not be placed higher than them, nor directly facing them, to avoid conflict.

  6. Avoid Negative Areas
Do not place the toad facing or near unclean areas such as bathrooms, as this is thought to affect its energy.

  7. Avoid Facing Water
The toad should not directly face aquariums or water tanks, as “seeing wealth turn into water” is considered detrimental to its fortune-attracting effect.

  8. Avoid Bedrooms and Beams
It is not recommended to place the toad in bedrooms or directly under structural beams.

  9. Avoid Facing Mirrors
The toad should not directly face a mirror, as this is believed to scatter its energy.
