The Placement and Taboos of the Guanyin Statue at Home
-
Do not face the restroom directly – This is considered disrespectful to the deity and may lead to health problems for family members.
-
Do not face the kitchen directly – This may result in constant arguments among family members and difficulty in controlling one’s emotions.
-
There should be no beam above the statue – A beam above the statue suggests instability and can lead to frequent headaches and a hard life for the family.
-
Do not face a staircase – This is believed to bring misfortune, turbulent fate, and the risk of accidents involving bloodshed.
-
If the statue faces a staircase – It is said to bring about surgeries, blood-related incidents, and hardships for family members.
-
The area around the statue should be free of vibrations or loud sounds – Avoid placing items like TVs, speakers, or other noise-emitting devices near the statue, as this may prevent the family from receiving the deity’s protection.
The most auspicious orientation for the Guanyin statue is "sitting west facing east." Because Guanyin represents purity and refrains from anything unclean or impure, there are three key directions to avoid:
-
Do not face the restroom.
-
Do not face the bedroom door.
-
Do not face the dining table.
Guanyin should be enshrined in a respectful and prominent position. If the entrance door faces south, the statue should sit facing south (positioned to the north); if the entrance door faces north, the statue should sit facing north (positioned to the south).
Avoid placing the statue in front of windows, in bedrooms, in corners, near restrooms, or on the bottom shelf of a cabinet.
It’s important to note that Guanyin and Buddha statues should not face unclean areas, such as restrooms. While the placement can be adjusted according to the space available, the most crucial rule is: "Do not face north." When practicing (e.g., chanting Buddha’s name or meditating), avoid facing north, as it symbolizes the direction of hell and requires great spiritual strength to counteract.
