Feng Shui Qilin Placement and Taboos: Everything You Need to Know

Qilin, also written as Kylin, is a legendary auspicious beast in Chinese tradition. Together with the phoenix, turtle, and dragon, it is known as one of the Four Sacred Creatures. Among auspicious beasts, the Qilin ranks second only to the dragon and is regarded as the king of sacred beasts and a mount of deities.

The male is called Qi, and the female is called Lin. According to tradition, a Qilin can live for two thousand years, breathe fire, and possesses a voice like thunder.

Qilin is believed to attract wealth, protect homes, neutralize negative influences, promote prosperity, bless descendants, and support career advancement. Placing a Qilin indoors is said to protect good people, repel harmful influences, transform negative energies, and suppress troublesome individuals. When placed inside a home, it is believed to bring auspicious blessings to the family, career, and many aspects of life.

Qilin made of gold are considered the most effective.

1. Promoting Career Advancement

Qilin is especially suitable for people with stable careers who wish to improve their official or professional prospects. It is particularly favored by those working in government departments, public institutions, or administrative organizations.

For career advancement, Qilin should be placed according to one's Nobleman Direction (Yi Ma Position):

  1. People born in the years of Monkey, Rat, or Dragon should place the Qilin in the Northeast (Yin direction).
  2. People born in the years of Snake, Rooster, or Ox should place the Qilin in the Northwest (Hai direction).
  3. People born in the years of Tiger, Horse, or Dog should place the Qilin in the Southwest (Shen direction).
  4. People born in the years of Pig, Rabbit, or Goat should place the Qilin in the Southeast (Si direction).

2. Blessing Descendants

A female Qilin is believed to have the ability to bless future generations. Placing it in the appropriate area of the bedroom is said to help attract offspring.

3. Protecting the Home and Attracting Wealth

Qilin is considered a symbol of auspiciousness. Placing it in the home is believed to suppress negative influences, increase auspicious energy, and improve both family fortune and career luck.

Qilin can also help ward off misfortune on behalf of the owner.

Traditionally, a Qilin used for improving luck should first be consecrated so that its power can be fully expressed.

When placing a Qilin for wealth enhancement, first identify the home's wealth area. The Qilin's head should face outward toward a window or outside area, but it should not directly face the main entrance, so as not to conflict with the Door Deity.

4. Neutralizing the Three Killings (San Sha)

The Three Killings change positions each year according to the annual Earthly Branch.

If the front door, master bedroom, children's room, or kitchen is located in the Three Killings sector, it is considered unfavorable.

To neutralize the Three Killings, a consecrated Qilin should be placed in the San Sha sector, with its head facing the direction of the Three Killings.

Annual Directions of the Three Killings

  • In years of Monkey, Rat, and Dragon, the Three Killings are in the South (Si, Wu, Wei directions).
  • In years of Tiger, Horse, and Dog, the Three Killings are in the North (Hai, Zi, Chou directions).
  • In years of Snake, Rooster, and Ox, the Three Killings are in the East (Yin, Mao, Chen directions).
  • In years of Pig, Rabbit, and Goat, the Three Killings are in the West (Shen, You, Xu directions).

5. Neutralizing the Two Black Star

The Two Black Star and Five Yellow Star are regarded as two major inauspicious stars in Feng Shui.

Placing a pair of consecrated bronze Qilin in the annual position of the Two Black Illness Star is believed to help neutralize sickness and misfortune associated with this star.

6. Dispelling Negative Energy and Countering Direct Sha

If a long corridor directly faces the front door, creating a Piercing Heart Sha (also known as Spear Sha), a pair of Qilin may be used to neutralize it.

If the negative energy is weak, such as a short corridor, one pair of Qilin is considered sufficient.

However, if the negative energy is strong and the corridor is long and straight, three Qilin should be used instead.

A Qilin may also be placed together with a Bagua mirror facing the source of the negative energy to neutralize it.

7. Neutralizing White Tiger Sha

Placing a pair of Qilin in the White Tiger position of a home is believed to neutralize harmful White Tiger energy and bring peace to the household.

This is especially recommended when the White Tiger side is exposed to chimneys, sharp structures, or other aggressive external features. Consecrated Qilin are considered particularly effective.

8. Neutralizing Elevator and Staircase Sha

If an elevator is located on the right-hand side of the residence, it is believed to create unfavorable Feng Shui.

If the elevator is specifically located in the western sector, a pair of Qilin may be placed in that area to help neutralize the negative influence.
