About Jade Type

There is a saying in the jade industry: “Ten jades, nine beans”, which means that bean type jadeite makes up the majority of all jadeite. The name is very descriptive—most bean type jadeite appears in short, column-like crystals, resembling rows of small beans embedded in the stone.Bean type jadeite is one of the most common varieties on the market. It comes in many forms and qualities. But did you know that within this category, there are actually five main subtypes?

1. Cat Bean Type

This variety is known for its extremely coarse texture. It usually contains green but is mixed with many other colors, such as gray, black, or brown. Considered a lower-grade jadeite, it is often found in antique markets and commonly carved into motifs like Pixiu or peace lock pendants.

2. Oil Bean Type

Named after the oily greenish tone of its base color, this jadeite has a coarse structure, sometimes with patchy or residual patterns. Although it doesn’t reach high quality standards, it is still a common and affordable choice in the bean type family.

3. Fine Bean Type

This is the most valuable among bean types. Fine bean jadeite can range widely in price—from just a few hundred yuan to over ten thousand—depending on its transparency and color. It usually has a slightly translucent quality, good luster, and compact, uniform structure, making it easy to distinguish from lower-grade bean jadeite. A highly recommended choice for collectors.

4. Common Bean Type

Often seen in wholesale markets, this jadeite features a bean-green color with a coarse texture and little to no transparency. Sometimes, rusty-colored patches or spots appear. Its value varies depending on color intensity, but overall it belongs to the mid-to-low grade category. Many tourists end up purchasing this type of jadeite during travels.

5. Sweet Bean Type

Also called “sugar bean type”, this variety has a finer structure compared to other bean types. Its color is a uniform light green, giving a fresh and pleasing appearance. Because of its attractive look and brightness, sweet bean jadeite is considered one of the higher-grade categories within bean type jadeite.
