The Nine Sons of the Dragon
In ancient Chinese mythology, it is said that the dragon gave birth to nine sons — yet none of them became dragons themselves. Each had a different form, character, and passion. The saying “The dragon’s nine sons are all different” is often used to describe siblings with distinct personalities and talents.
In Chinese culture, the number nine (九) represents many or abundance, and some scholars believe that the phrase “nine sons” is symbolic rather than literal — it simply means that the dragon’s offspring are numerous and diverse.
Below are the most well-known “Nine Sons of the Dragon” and their unique traits:
1. Qiú Niú (囚牛)
The eldest son, who loves music. He is often depicted crouching on the head of a traditional Chinese string instrument, symbolizing harmony and art.

2. Yá Zì (睚眦)
The second son, fierce and combative by nature. He delights in battle and weaponry, and his image is often carved onto sword hilts or knife handles. He represents anger and vengeance, known for a narrow heart and fiery temper.

3. Cháo Fēng (嘲风)
The third son resembles a mythical beast. Adventurous and daring, he enjoys risk and high places. His figure can often be seen among the decorative creatures standing on the ridges of ancient palace roofs — ever watchful and facing the wind. Some legends even regard him as a phoenix-like dragon spirit
.
4. Pú Láo (蒲牢)
The fourth son, famous for his loud roar. When struck, he lets out a thunderous cry, and for this reason, his image was cast on large bells to amplify their deep, echoing sound.

5. Suān Ní (狻猊)
The fifth son, resembling a lion. He loves peace and stillness, enjoys sitting quietly, and adores the scent of incense. That’s why his image is often found on Buddhist incense burners and thrones, symbolizing serenity and devotion.

6. Bà Xià (霸下), also known as Bì Xì (赑屃)
The sixth son looks like a turtle with dragon features and loves to carry heavy weights. His image supports stone tablets and steles in temples — a creature of endurance and strength, bearing the weight of history on its back.

7. Bì Àn (狴犴)
The seventh son, resembling a tiger, is a guardian of justice. Fierce yet fair, he is said to love law and order. His likeness decorates the gates of prisons and government halls, symbolizing authority and protection.
8. Fù Xì (负屃)
The eighth son has the body of a dragon and a refined, scholarly temperament. He is fond of literature and art, often shown coiling gracefully around the top of stone steles, representing wisdom and culture.

9. Chī Wěn (螭吻), also called Chī Wǔ or Chī Tail
The ninth son has the head of a dragon and the body of a fish. He loves to swallow water, and so he became the roof ridge ornament at the ends of palace roofs, believed to protect against fire and disaster.

These are the most recognized of the dragon’s nine sons, though versions vary across regions and dynasties. Together, they embody the rich imagination of Chinese mythology — a world where every creature, even a dragon’s child, carries a unique purpose and spirit.
