Most buyers assume that the deeper the purple, the better—and pricier—the amethyst. In reality, that is the easiest way to get misled. Here is how amethyst quality actually works and how to evaluate a natural stone.
1 Tone Beats Darkness: Muddy, Inky Purple Is Often Low Grade
Dark purple does not necessarily indicate top tier. Stones that look heavy, murky, or almost black are typically packed with mineral inclusions and impurities that block light.
Natural high-grade amethyst features a clean, luminous violet hue with balanced saturation and good transparency. Low-grade material looks dense and lifeless, allowing minimal light transmission.

2 Origin Drives Value: Significant Price Variance
Two stones may look comparable at first glance, but origin creates notable price differences. Two key regions dominate the market:
Known for rich violet saturation, subtle blue secondary tones, solid clarity, and dense texture. Retains market value well.
Leans lighter with soft lilac to lavender tones. Widely available, accessible, and suitable for regular daily wear.
Note: Be cautious with stones marketed as "top-tier" without an identified origin, as standard commercial stock is often relabeled.

3 Clarity Sets the Price
When color saturation is identical, internal clarity dictates the final valuation:
- Gem / Ice Grade: High transparency with minor natural silk or wisps. Clear, well-formed material.
- Commercial Grade: Noticeable internal clouding, visible inclusions, and fractures. Limited brilliance and lower price points.
Completely flawless natural amethyst in large sizes is uncommon. An oversized, completely clear piece at an unusually low price is typically glass or synthetic quartz.
4. Bead Size Impacts Overall Cost
Larger bead diameters require cutting away considerably more rough material. Given identical clarity and color, larger sizes command higher per-unit pricing.
5. Avoid the Warm Light Trap
Warm display lighting artificially saturates purple hues. Always evaluate amethyst under indirect natural daylight to inspect true body color and internal inclusions.
